Matteo Congiu wins the A'Design Award and Competition

Published on April 18, 2023

Sardinia-based young product designer Matteo Congiu has won the prestigious A'Design Award and Competition in the Furniture Design category 2023.

His "Bisu" project is the world's first cork bed that combines functionality, wellness, ethics, sustainability, and design. Congiu, who studied at IED Cagliari and IED Milano, has a deep connection with cork, a natural material he has used for his creations since childhood. "I always wondered why a material with all these properties was used almost exclusively to make caps. So I thought it could be used to make something useful and clever, and I made this bed," said Matteo. Bisu is the first project he realized with his family's business, founded in 2018 in Sardinia, which combines their wood and cork processing expertise with Congiu's innovative design ambitions.

The A'Design Award provides designers worldwide with a unique opportunity to showcase their best projects, offering them a special trophy, a certificate of design excellence, and an annual book of award-winning projects. Congiu dedicated the award to Sardinia, stating that he lives in a beautiful place with excellent natural materials and that being a product designer on an island is no longer a limit in the digital age.

Matteo will present the new products from his furniture collection at Wanted Design NY May 21-23.
