The Brazilian Diary

For the first time, IED Alumni landed in Brazil to meet the alumni of the IED offices in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Here is what happened during a week full of unforgettable events, meetings and emotions.

Saturday 22 October - Rio de Janeiro

Beating the jet lag, the IED Alumni team led by Elena Sacco, Director of IED Alumni Relations, is ready to launch into the first intense day in Brazil. The beginning could not be more fascinating: in the splendid setting of the ALDEIA Maracanã - Centro Cultural e de Resistência da Cultura Indígena (Cultural and Resistance Center for Native Culture) the fashion show of the Éwà Poranga brand takes place, curated by two Fashion Design alumnae, now stylists, who have chosen to use their talent to enhance the tradition of indigenous cultures. Colours, materials, and tribal objects become symbols of a fashion that interprets the demands of a world, that of local tribes, which we must commit to protecting more than ever. Suffice it to say that of the over 2000 original tribes, only 305 remain. They are Sofia Gama e Sandra Gomes Tolentino. The production is entrusted to another IED alumnus: Alexandre Daniel Rese, Academic-Administrative Coordinator IED Rio.

Tuesday 25 October - Rio de Janeiro

A very important date for a long-awaited and equally long-prepared moment: the first Brazilian stage of the IED Alumni Roadshow in the new IED Rio headquarters at Casa d'Itália. To welcome them, the headquarters staff, led by the new Point of Contact IED Alumni BraziRoberta de Freitas, IED Rio Design and Master brand alumna, several really interesting services has been launched. Among the most important, the increase in the platform of jobs, internships and freelance postings for the Brazilian market, thanks to new significant collaborations, and free access by all alumni to libraries and labs.

The Rio Roadshow saw the presence of two exceptional guests, interviewed by Elena Sacco as real sources of inspiration: Patricia Nicolich and Erica Rosa. Nicolich is a landscape architect known for her unique and innovative gaze. A former student of the MADEIN – IED RIO 2017 course, she has opened a new branch in the field of landscaping entitled "Ephemeral landscapes", applying precisely the MADEIN methodology. Her project will be realized in May 2023 by the ENSP-École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage in Versailles / FR.

Erica Rosa is a fashion designer, entrepreneur and creative director of her own brand, and owner of physical and virtual stores that distribute her exclusive garments, designed from sketches and produced in Rio de Janeiro, all over the world. Promoting a slow fashion philosophy, made of quality and attention to detail.

The event was also an opportunity to present the Barraca Project, in collaboration with the Italian Consulate and with the Consul General in Rio Massimiliano Iacchini. It is a social design project, created by IED alumni Rio Erick Araújo and Lívia Cavalcanti, which should arrive through IED Milano at Fuorisalone 2023.

Thursday 27 October - São Paulo

The second Brazilian stage of the IED Alumni Roadshow has become a real event within the event, as it took place in a very special context, that of Apriti IED, a large exhibition dedicated to graduates of the last two years. The objective? Celebrate and share the thesis projects of all those who concluded their cycle of studies at the IED headquarters in São Paulo in 2020 and 2021. A truly special moment, after the difficult years of the pandemic, which saw the participation of many ex students from IED offices around the world. The exhibition, presented by Christian Ullmann, coordinator of Circular Economy and Social Innovation at the Centro de Inovação IED Brasil projects, was attended by:  Luca Lima Pereira, Amanda de Vasconcelos Pereira, Gustavo Nieri, Lais Zanocco, Gabrielli Godoy, Paulo Lima, Juliana Alencar, Nathalia Sartarello, Gabriela Rocha, Gianluca Arakaki Vigoni Allodi, Flávia Landroni, Isadora Barone Spachi, Ana Carolina Pozzan Vetorazo, Julia Dillon, Lucas de Lara Socci, Rafael Bueno do Prado Kiraly, Victoria Carolina Santos Nascimento, Otávio Marques Mendonça, Eduarda Dalcanale Frandsen, Gabriela Guaglini, Isabella Almeira, Guilherme Fraga, Isidora Rehbein, Maria Beatriz, Amanda Pinheiro, Anna Carolina Menezes, Bianca Zagolim, Rafaella Parma, and Camila Romiti.

Guests of the Roadshow were alumni Francisco Rosatelli and Giuseppe Greco. The former, now art director at Amazon Music, has an extraordinary career in cinema and advertising creative direction behind him; the second is Strategy & Business Design Consultant at Monitor Deloitte.

And to round off this stage in Brazil in the best possible way, a new collaboration is being launched, which is also a way to make the community of students and ex-students even more united: the alumnus Mattia Taje, manager of Ricamline, a leading Italian company in the development of embroidery for bags, footwear and prêt-à-porter clothing, will provide free material to IED laboratories and students.
