  • Founder and Inventor Revolve air | Lilium Lead Designer

Who

Andrea Mocellin, Founder at REVOLVE WHEEL and Lead Product Designer at Lilium.

What

Andrea created the first active wheelchair that meets universal carry on luggage size standards on aeroplanes: it reduces its space by 60% when wheels and frame are folded.

Where

“I was born in Marostica and graduated with honours from IED-Turin in Transportation Design. Then I attended the Royal College of Art in London, graduating with a Master's degree in vehicle design. I am currently studying Business Administration to have a broader view of the business and its fundamentals”.

Why

"When I first started at the IED, I was fascinated by how other students were able to represent their ideas with drawings, 3D and physical clay models such high-quality. I felt that was what I wanted to do in life. We were constantly involved in projects with automotive companies. This made me dream of a job in their R&D departments was not impossible. Of course, getting to this level required a lot of effort, a great sense of competition within the class, and even more so an international attitude".

How

"My first real project was at Pininfarina, in the team that designed the exterior of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. After that, I collaborated for about three years in designing the exterior of what became the current Alfa Romeo Giulia. After these incredible experiences in production cars, I worked a lot through Granstudio for Baic motor (a Chinese joint venture with Mercedes Benz), where I was responsible for a few concept cars. And the Senova Offspace Concept was even awarded concept car of the year in 2016.

After my career in Italy, I moved to Munich as Senior Exterior Designer at Nio where I was involved in the future design of cars with autonomous driving technology. I am currently working in future aviation at Lilium as Lead Product Designer for both the exterior and interior of the current Lilium Jet, a unique experience involving sustainable mobility. In addition to my daily involvement with Lilium, I am finalising some projects related to technologically aided mobility, accessibility and inclusion. I am continuing on how analogue technology can create unique vehicles, providing an utterly intuitive language that is not just digitally related".

A message for IED students and graduates

"I think it is essential to follow your instincts and passion when doing creative work as a designer. Only in this way will it be possible to maintain a consistent personality in the project that future graduates will work on and keep the patience to see those products in real life".
