Daniel Nikolovski: A Narrative-Driven Designer who is Redefining Interior and Furniture Design

Published on May 24, 2023

Daniel Nikolovski, a Macedonian-born interior and furniture designer, has been making waves in the design world with his captivating and narrative-driven work. Currently based in Milan, Italy, Nikolovski's designs are characterized by sculptural geometries, altered proportions, and an array of materials that include steel, resin, tortoiseshell acetate, boldly-patterned woods, and fabrics commonly found in the fashion industry.

With a background in design from IED Milano, Nikolovski has gained valuable experience working with renowned brands and institutions. Some of his notable pasts include Creative Director and Designer for the furniture brand KABINET in Verona (2019), creating compelling set designs for the exhibition "Designing Craft / Crafting Design" in Vienna (2017), and undertaking interior design projects for NCDA in Hong Kong (2015).

Nikolovski's work has earned much attention on the international stage, as he has exhibited at prestigious events such as Salone del Mobile, FIAC in Paris, Paris Design Week, Offsite Online in New York, and Vienna Design Week. His innovative designs have caught the eye of prominent publications, including Elle Decoration, Marie Claire Maison, AD, and The New York Times.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Daniel Nikolovski and discuss his latest exhibition at the Milano Design WeekSacred Wellbeing”, and his future projects. When asked about the inspiration behind it he said "The idea behind my latest show at Salone 2023 was to explore the concept of parties and social gatherings from a more sacred and ritualistic perspective. I wanted to create a table set for a party where each piece offers a glimpse of sacredness and gives a sense of meditation to the act of drinking. This idea originated from the Martini Champagne Glass, which inspired an entire family of objects."

Nikolovski's work goes beyond mere aesthetics; it reflects his ongoing professional research and desire to delve into lesser-explored aspects of his cultural background. "I strive to uncover the unknown and unfamiliar elements of my heritage," he shared. "My work is a journey of discovery, where I bring forth hidden aspects and translate them into my designs. These sources of inspiration often stem from religious or social contexts that are not commonly seen in mainstream design."

Looking ahead to Design Week 2024, Nikolovski has ambitious plans. "I aim to further explore the art behind tableware and glassware, studying the social connectedness that arises through drinking rituals. I am intrigued by the intersection of food, design, and communal experiences."

Daniel Nikolovski continues to push boundaries, and challenges traditional notions of design, infusing his work with storytelling, cultural exploration, and a deep appreciation for materials and craftsmanship. As we eagerly anticipate his future projects, it is clear that his unique perspective will continue to captivate and inspire the design world.
